Dr Hjördis Lorenz

Hjördis is a Clinical Psychologist who works with a wide range of mental health difficulties including anxieties, phobias, grief and loss, and relationship difficulties. She is particularly experienced in working with people struggling with the effects of trauma from childhood or adulthood, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD, substance use, and social anxiety. In all her work, she adapts therapy to the individual’s needs, including neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD), health issues, and cultural contexts.

Alongside her work at ABODE, Hjördis works in a specialist trauma service in the NHS, and researches social anxiety treatments at the University of Oxford. Hjördis places great emphasis on the individual’s goals and on working together to meet their needs. Her work is informed by principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Systemic therapy. She is a BABCP accredited CBT therapist, and is also trained in trauma-focused CBT.

She believes that, too often, shame and self-blame can silence people, so she uses a non- judgemental, validating, and compassionate approach to help individuals understand, cope with, and overcome difficulties.
